A Brief Overview of Training Ferrets

In this article, we are going to discuss a brief overview of training ferrets. Even though ferrets have become extremely popular over the past couple of years, they aren't your normal pet and there are several people that assume these playful creatures are similar to wild animals instead of companion pets. Despite the fact that ferrets appear as if they belong within the woods rather than them being within your living room, all of the ferrets that you purchase at a pet store are actually very domesticated and they are capable of being trained to do several things.

Although ferrets are very strong willed, ferrets are also fairly easy to train and very intelligent. If you use consistency and patience, you will be able to train a ferret. Similar to training any other pet, you are going to need to match all of your training methods to the ferret's specific personality, however there are a couple of basic training tips for ferrets that you are going to need to follow.

Positive reinforcement is the absolute best way to approach training ferrets. Positive reinforcement training provides you with the ability to mold the overall behavior that you want your ferret to have by giving the ferret a positive reward, once the ferret has performed a certain behavior. In the beginning, you should reward the ferret for it's behavior that is similar to the behavior desired and then work gradually to reach the precise behavior.

Even though treats and foods are very effective rewards for this type of training, you have to make sure that they are given within small amounts. In comparison to punishment, positive reinforcement is a lot better suited for training because you are going to teach them what to do instead of something that you don't want them to do.

In the event the ferret acts in a manner that you dislike, the absolute best thing that you can do is take all of your attention off of the ferret. When you do this, you won't be providing the ferret with attention for acting badly. The main reason for this is because there are some animals that consider any attention to be good even when you are a little angry with them. Because of this, if you absolutely have to reprimand your ferret for its bad behavior, the best option may be a time out. You should never hit or even speak harshly to your ferret for any reason.

All of these training ferret tips can work great for the big issues like litter box training as well as training not to nip during the time that he is playing.
